UKRAINE EDITION
WITH SIRAI BUCARELLI

September 2022

When Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the status quo of our world was beamed back into times we thought would stay in the last century.

Regardless a complicated political situation neither Ukrainians nor the rest of the world would have ever imagined such a devastating and cruel violation of democratic, universal human rights.

The war touches hearts of people thousands of miles away from the fighting and it is up to us to react the right way, to come together as one and to support everyone affected by this tragedy.

We understand that now the whole world is watching Ukraine closely and with this edition we want to draw attention not only to the terrible aspects with which Ukraine is now associated but also to the beautiful ones. The edition includes a total of four motives.

One t-shirt features the poem HOW DO WE BUILD OUR HOMES? by author Serhiy Zhadan. It was written in 2015 for a theatre play dedicated to the Crimea and its people who were forced to leave their homes.

The second motive WHY? is inspired by a famous visual from the Vietnam war. It is the question that keeps circulating in our mind since February 24th.

The two other motives are a collaboration with illustrator Sirai Bucarelli. MARIA’S DOVE is referring to a painting displayed in the Ivankovo museum in Ukraine which was saved as one of the only exhibits as the museum burned down after a missile attack. VASYLKIV ROOSTER is inspired by a characteristic ceramic jug designed in the 1960s. In April 2022, a civilian building got hit by a missile — the only part that remained was the rooster jug standing in the middle of an open kitchen cabinet — becoming a symbol of hope and strength ever since.

The only design detail on the front side of each t-shirt is a modernized Ukrainian embroidery standing for good luck.

With each t-shirt sold, 100% of the profit is being donated to “Petners Berlin” — a Berlin based nonprofit organization helping animals in Ukrainian shelters by distributing food and supplies across the country.
